The evolution of HOM‐C homeoboxes in the Dipteran family Drosophilidae by R. DeSalle; M. A. Branham; P. O'Grady; J. Gatesy is a Agricultural and Biological Sciences article available to read on EtoBox.

What is The evolution of HOM‐C homeoboxes in the Dipteran family Drosophilidae about?

## Abstract Forty‐five new Homeotic Complex (HOM‐C) homeobox sequences from six species of Drosophilidae (__Drosophila heteroneura__, __D. adiastola__, __Zaprionus vittiger__, __Chymomyza amoena__, __Scaptodrosophila pattersoni__ and __Hirtodrosophila pictiventris__) were obtained using a PCR‐cloning method. These new homeoboxes are from the __labial__, __proboscipedia__, __Deformed__, __Sex combs reduced__, __fushi tarazu__, __Antennapedia__, __Ultrabithorax__, __abdominal‐A__ and __Abdominal‐B__ genes. Phylogenetic signal in the homeobox sequences was assessed and several aspects of sequence evolution were examined. In particular, codon bias was examined and found to exist between the drosophilid species examined here and __Anopheles gambiae__ outgroup sequences. In addition, different patterns of codon bias were detected in homeoboxes interrupted with introns when compared to homeoboxes that are uninterrupted.
