In 1870, families in New London, Connecticut used toothsticks and jars of toothpaste for oral hygiene. Lucius, the son of a dentist, innovated by proposing the use of metal tubes for toothpaste after observing artists in Paris. He and his father developed a method to fill these tubes, leading to the modern toothpaste tube we use today.
