What is Retour Sur L’amour Courtois about?

We intend here to come back to the concept of courtly love by articulating three different conceptions linked to three recurring adjectives of medieval literature: the bone, fine, and fole amor, which constitute –at least for the 12th and 13th centuries literature– a whole system allowing us to understand love relationships in interaction with the contradictory requirements they are made from. By applying the controversial designation of courtly love to all the possibilities provided by this system, we thus manage to use the medieval terms only in very specific –although almost never totally pure– cases. Indeed, the main interest of this diagram is precisely to illustrate the sometimes imperceptible shifts between the different concepts.
