The rock cycle describes the process by which rocks are formed and change over time. 1) Rocks undergo weathering and erosion, breaking down into sediment. 2) This sediment is buried and compacted into sedimentary rock. 3) Heat and pressure then metamorphose sedimentary rock into metamorphic rock. 4) Melting of rock forms magma, which cools and crystallizes into igneous rock. 5) Erosion eventually breaks down these rocks again, restarting the rock cycle.
