The MEGACO/H.248 signaling protocol was introduced by the IETF and ITU to help control and manage increasing VoIP traffic, as voice was no longer restricted to circuit-switched networks. It provides a master/slave architecture where a Media Gateway Controller acts as the master server containing call control intelligence, while Media Gateways act as slave devices to control VoIP traffic through commands like Add, Modify, Subtract, Move, AuditValue, AuditCapabilities, Notify, and ServiceChange.
