This document discusses the high mechanical and thermal loads on turbine rotors during start up and shut down that can lead to fatigue or creep fatigue stresses in disc and blade connections. Conventional calculation methods are insufficient for life assessment of these connections, so inelastic finite element analyses using complex material models are required to properly account for the effects on damage from static, cyclic and creep stresses.
