What is Anarchy: An International Relations Perspective about?

## Abstract In the context of international politics, “anarchy” designates the absence of a sovereign authority above that of nation‐states in the international system. The assumption of anarchy is often the starting point for theories of international politics. In the context of international relations, anarchy does not necessarily imply a lack of order or chaos inherent in the system, indeed the international system exhibits a tremendous amount of routine and stability over time, but rather a condition of the system with which nation‐states must deal. Because under anarchy there is no authority above that of states, each state enjoys sovereignty and has the ability to decide for itself and to take its own course of action.
