What is Probabilistic Approach to Turbulent Two-phase Flows Modelling and Simulation: Theoretical and Numerical Issues about?
In this paper, we discuss theoretical and numerical issues related to the simulations of turbulent two-phase flows. The two-phase flows considered are dispersed two-phase flows. They are composed of a continuous phase, which is a turbulent fluid, and a dispersed phase, which represents a number of discrete inclusions referred to as particles. The first objective of the paper is to emphasize why probabilistic methods are attractive and more appropriate than classical moment approaches even when simple engineering answers are sought for. In the present work, the probabilistic description is limited to the particles while the fluid phase is simulated by classical mean-field models. These probabilistic models appear in practice as Monte Carlo methods and consist in simulating the dynamics of a large number of particles using stochastic models for the time-evolution of the variables attached to each particle. The main purpose of the present paper is to describe present state-of-the-art models and to indicate where theoretical and numerical improvements are needed. The underlying hope is to show that these engineering problems involve interesting and challenging theoretical questions.
