World War 1 was caused by rising imperialism, nationalism, and militarism among European powers that led to increasing tensions over colonial disputes and military buildups. This was exacerbated by the formation of opposing alliances between countries. World War 2 was partly caused by the harsh Treaty of Versailles that left Germany resentful and paved the way for Hitler to rise to power on a nationalist platform and begin rearming Germany in violation of the treaty.
