Matthias Jakob Schleiden, Theodor Schwann, and Rudolf Virchow were founders of cell theory. Schleiden discovered that plants are composed of cells while studying plant structure under a microscope. Schwann discovered that animal tissues are also composed of cells. Together with Virchow, they established that the cell is the basic unit of all living things.
