What is Negative Skin Friction in Pile Foundations about?
Negative skin friction occurs when soil surrounding a pile settles more than the pile, causing downward drag on the pile. It can be caused by consolidation settlement of soft soils due to filling, dewatering, or other disturbances. Only a few millimeters of relative movement between the soil and pile is needed to fully mobilize negative skin friction. Designers must account for the additional downward force from negative skin friction by subtracting it from the pile
