The 1918 influenza pandemic killed 50-100 million people, more than WWI. It was caused by the H1N1 influenza A virus subtype. Paramyxoviruses are also major respiratory pathogens in children under 5, causing illnesses like croup. Both families have RNA genomes and can undergo antigenic drift or shift, requiring periodic vaccine updates.
