Sarah Miriam Peale was an early American portrait painter born in 1800 in Philadelphia. She was trained by her father James Peale and uncle Charles Wilson Peale to paint. Peale painted portraits of politicians and military figures in Baltimore and Washington D.C. for over 20 years. She was one of the first women accepted to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1824. Peale continued painting until illness forced her to move to St. Louis in 1847, where she lived until her death in 1885 at age 85.
