This book tells the story of a small paper company founded in Richmond, Virginia, in 1887 that evolved into a diversified chemical enterprise with worldwide operations. The central event is the borrowing of $200 million in 1962 by Albernarle Paper Manufacturing Company for the acquisition of Ethyl Corporation (Delaware), chartered in 1924. This maneuver was aptly described by journalists as "Jonah swallowing the whale," because Albernale was buying a company more than thirteen times its own price. At the time of the purchase Albernale changed its name to Ethyl Corporation (Virginia). Consistently among the "Fortune 500," this corporation is a high-technology producer of performance chemicals for the petroleum industry, specialty chemicals, plastics, and aluminum products. It has interests in oil, gas, and coal. Ethyl also owns First Colony Life Insurance Company. As the title suggests, the volume is primarily a narrative of people, of bold leaders and their talented lieutenants.
