Epidemic dropsy is a clinical condition resulting from consumption of edible oils adulterated with Argemone mexicana oil. The toxic alkaloids in Argemone oil cause widespread capillary dilation and increased permeability, leading to leakage of protein-rich plasma into tissues and formation of edema. An outbreak in New Delhi in 1998 affected over 2500 people and caused 65 deaths. The condition is managed through removal of adulterated oils and symptomatic treatment of edema and cardiac failure.
