What is Leroy's zoo : featuring the folk art carvings of Leroy Ramon Archuleta about?
Leroy Ramon Archuleta was born in 1949 in Tesuque, New Mexico, and has been carving wooden animals since age 16. His father, Felipe, had been told by the Lord to "carve wood" and soon gained a following for his work. Leroy began to help his father, and in time developed his own style and a reputation of his own. Leroy carves animals that he has seen in real life, around his home, or while hunting and fishing. These include dogs, pigs, fish, squirrels, coyotes, and rabbits. But he also refers to books for ideas for animals such as lynx, rams, yaks, and macaws.
He uses fallen cottonwood trees that he finds along New Mexico arroyos, first using a chain saw to roughly shape the animal. Then he begins carving with grinders, hatchets, chisels, knives, and other tools, and finally uses sandpaper to get a smooth finish. He glues on marbles for eyes, twine for hair, and broom bristles for whiskers.

Archuleta's work is highly sought after by collectors such as Warren and Sylvia Lowe of LaFayette, Louisiana, who selected the carvings pictured in this book and wrote a brief description of each animal from A(rmadillo) to Z(ebra). The text is written for children, who especially like A
