Gōjū-ryū is a traditional Okinawan style of karate that combines hard and soft techniques. It was developed by Higaonna Kanryō in the 19th century and further developed by his student Chōjun Miyagi. Gōjū-ryū emphasizes linear "hard" strikes along with circular "soft" techniques and flowing movements. It has 12 core katas and trains techniques through kihon, kata, and sparring known as kumite.
