What is Encyclopaedia Judaica about?

The publication of the sixteen volumes of the Encyclopaedia Judaica, under the general editorship of Cecil Roth (1966-70) and Geoffrey Wigoder (1971), is without any doubt a notable achievement. To begin with, whereas nowadays it might take twenty to thirty years to complete a series of such dimensions, this Encyclopaedia not only passed from planning stage to finished product within the incredibly short space of six years, but together with its impressively detailed index of 560 pages in volume 1, it appeared as a single unit on one and the same day. As a result, instead of, as is normally the case, volume 1 being largely out of date by the time the last instalment is ready to leave the press, all sixteen tomes belong academically to the same vintage. The present production is not the first of its kind in English. Its predecessors were the not particularly important Universal Jewish Encyclopedia (1939-43), and the twelve volumes of the Jewish Encyclopedia (1901-5).
