What is Winter Solstice at Karahan Tepe about?
During the early morning sunrise of December 20th 2021, Hugh Newman and JJ Ainsworth witnessed a stunning winter solstice alignment phenomenon at Karahan Tepe (c.9400 BC) in southeast Turkey that had not been seen since it was deliberately covered over at the end of its use, in around 8200 BC. The authors propose this is the earliest ever proof of the winter solstice being incorporated into a megalithic site.
