About this document
Harmonics: Causes and Effects Explained by Arpit Patel is a document available to read on EtoBox.
Harmonics are integer multiples of the fundamental supply frequency that distort the normal sinusoidal waveform. They are caused by non-linear loads like rectifiers and variable frequency drives. Harmonics increase losses in equipment like generators, transformers, motors and cables, leading to overheating. This overheating can damage insulation and shorten equipment lifespan. Proper derating and use of "K factor" rated equipment is recommended for installations with non-linear loads.
