What is Understanding Quoted Speech Rules about?

Direct speech, also called quoted speech, reports the exact words said within quotation marks. Indirect speech, or reported speech, conveys the general idea without quotations and changes verb tenses. As a rule, reported speech changes the verb tense to the past tense, except for when the original tense was past perfect or past perfect continuous which remain unchanged. Modal verbs like will change to would and can change to could in reported speech.
