Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare blood disorder seen more often in children than adults that is caused by an uncontrolled proliferation of lymphocytes and macrophages. This hyperinflammation leads to a cytokine storm syndrome where lymphocytes and macrophages secrete high amounts of inflammatory cytokines, resulting in a life-threatening condition.
