Between 1999 and 2005, 233 stranded cetaceans from 19 species were reported in the Canary Islands, with 138 undergoing necropsy. The study found that 33.3% of these cetaceans died due to anthropogenic causes, primarily from fishing interactions and ship collisions, while 59.4% had natural causes, including diseases. The findings highlight the impact of both human activities and natural factors on cetacean mortality in this region.
