Copernicus proposed that the Earth and planets revolve around the Sun, rather than everything revolving around the Earth. While he could not prove it, he argued it was more elegant than the old Ptolemaic system. Galileo then made advances in physics including introducing the telescope to officials in Venice. Using his telescope, Galileo was able to observe phases of Venus that supported Copernicus
