What is Cellulose Acetate Coatings for the Polarographic Oxygen Electrode about?
New coatings for the polarographic oxygen electrode utilizing cellulose acetate derivatives are described. These compounds offer several advantages over the more conventional collodion coatings. They furnish exceptionally robust membranes and also provide the electrode with remarkable stability. The mechanical properties and electrode-modifying characteristics of several cellulose acetate derivatives have been investigated. It has been shown that cellulose diacetate provides a particularly firm mechanical attachment to the glass/l? electrode after heat treatment which gives a virtually permanent protective coating. Such parameters of electrode properties as sensitivity, 90% response time, noise level, moving artifact, protection against poisoning, and long-term stability have been measured as a function of coating thickness. Depending upon the required electrode characteristics, two methods for coating with cellulose diacetates are described, including a novel technique using solvent-antisolvent mixtures which permits the formation of very thick but wrinkle-free membrane coats. Since 1942, when Davies and Brink (1) carried out their systematic studies on the use of platinum electro
