The article by Jamy et al in this issue of Cancer titled "Impact of Insurance Status on the Survival of Younger Patients Diagnosed With Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia in the United States" is a very meaningful work in our field, 1 and I believe that it is a helpful addition to our collective approach to the modern-day practice of leukemia. Outcomes for patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) have greatly improved over time, with a large, single-center academic experience, led by Abaza and Ravandi et al, yielding a 96% complete remission rate among 187 patients with APL, an induction mortality of only 4%, and a 5-year overall survival rate of 88%. 2 Furthermore, in a definitive, large, randomized, phase 3, multicenter setting, Lo-Coco et al 3 demonstrated complete remission in 100% of lower risk APL patients treated with all-trans retinoic acid and arsenic and a 2-year event-free survival rate of 97%.
