Introduction Commercial plant production in plant factories with artificial lighting Commercial plant production in plant factories with artificial lighting (PFALs) with lightemitting diodes (LEDs) started in 1998 (See Chapter 2). Since then, the number of PFALs commercially producing leafy vegetables has been increasing in Asian, North American, and European countries. On the other hand, many PFAL companies and researchers have been trying to commercialize the production of medicinal plants (or herbs), fruiting vegetables (e.g., strawberries and tomatoes), small fruits (e.g., blueberries), and root vegetables (e.g., carrots, turnips, and radishes) as the next target plants for PFALs.As of 2020, the numbers of commercial PFALs successfully producing fruiting vegetables, small fruits, and root vegetables are limited. However, the number of such enterprises is expected to increase steadily in the near future. The focus of this chapter is head vegetables such as cabbage, Chinese cabbage, and head lettuces as the next promising group of plants for commercial PFAL production.
