Maigret is fifty-two, due for retirement in three years. His career has hardly been uneventful, his cases have been spectacular and followed avidly by the press and the public; his name has become a household word. Three more years, and he can retire, honoured and respected, to fish and cultivate his garden. At least that is what anyone would have thought until the Superintendent received a very peremptory summons to the Chief Commissioner's office.
