What is Generalised molecular-field treatment of magnetic ordering in locally isotropic systems, applied to Gd-based compounds about?
For a system consisting of exchange-coupled local magnetic 'units', such as R (rare earth) atoms or T (transition metal) atoms, the coupling is treated in the molecular-field approximation. Subsequently, the response of the units is treated exactly, either quantum-mechanically (for the R moments) or by using a phenomenological approach (for the T moments). The onset of order is determined by a single-mode. For systems with translation symmetry, the modes can be identified with the Fourier components of the magnetisation. In the absence of anisotropy (e.g. R=Gd), equal-moment modes are preferred, and, in combination with a homogeneous mode induced by a magnetic field, helical modes will be formed. Familiar two or more sublattice systems can also be described in this way. The strength of the model lies in the fact that for one set of fitting parameters a consistent description is given for different experimental results, i.e. magnetisation as a function of the applied magnetic field, and of the temperature, as well as specific heat as a function of temperature in various magnetic fields. The model has been used to describe antiferromagnetic Gd compounds. It was shown that the couplin
