It has been shown that tris(triphenylphosphine)dinitrogencobalt hydride etherate (I) is the direct precursor of the catalyst of isomerization of cis-Zpentene to the trans-isomer. The isomerization is second order with respect to pentene and first order with respect to the cobalt complex. It is inhibited by excess of the substrate. The structures of complexes present in the reaction mixture are discussed.
