An earthen cofferdam consists of an earthen embankment built around the area to be enclosed. It is constructed where the water depth is less than 18 inches and current is slow. The embankment is made of clay and sand or gravel mixture and is pitched with rubble on the water side to prevent erosion. Once built, the water inside is pumped out to allow excavation and foundation construction below the water level.
