What is Plastic Behaviour of Metals and Strain Localization about?

A brief survey will first be given of the continuum mechanical approach to the plastic behaviour of metals, and of its application in problems of civil or mechanical engineering. As an example, the effect of strain localization is considered. Here, the plastic deformation concentrates in small zones inside the material which may be limited to singular surfaces. This will be illustrated with the help of necking and shear band instabilities occurring under conditions of uniaxial stress. Finally, localized shear bands will be dealt with, by the process of metal extrusion from rectangular block containers, considering both heat generation and heat conduction.
