Walter Benjamin maintained a relationship with Georges Bataille, who worked as a librarian at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. Benjamin asked his friend Theodor Adorno to remove a reference to Bataille from a document to avoid upsetting Bataille. Before Benjamin fled France in 1940, he left manuscripts, including his unfinished work The Arcades Project, with Bataille for safekeeping. Bataille hid the manuscripts in the library.
