## BOOK REVIEWS seems unusual to me considering that ceramics are mainly baked clays with natural or artificial aplastic temper added to maintaidattain adequate green-and fired-strengths for the ceramic object. Chapter 11, on native metals and minerals, is regretfully short, as the topic is possibly the least understood by many of the archaeologists with whom I have had contact. Nevertheless, the chapter is both interesting and informative. The nature of the native metals of copper, gold, silver, platinum, and iron are reviewed. The microscopic criteria for distinguishing between native, smelted, and worked metals might have provided useful information. The chemical and physical characteristics of native copper and its associated mineral inclusions are emphasized, and those of smelted copper are touched upon. The section on gold is rather complete and demonstrates the extensive interest shown in, and exacting studies made of, this commodity. The section on native silver reflects the limited literature on the subject but it is adequate. The available information on the platinoid metals, essentially as 'contaminant' inclusions in gold of placer origin, is well covered in that section
