Gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) is a defensive mechanism of the gingiva. It is formed in the gingival crevice and sulcus by transudate that becomes an inflammatory exudate. GCF contains enzymes, proteins, cells, and electrolytes that help defend against pathogens and indicate periodontal disease levels. It is collected using absorbent paper strips, threads, or microcapillaries and analyzed to evaluate periodontal status and treatment effects.
