It was originally part of a larger farm owned by the Mitchell family since 1781. In 1843, William B. Mitchell carved out a small commercial area called Litwalton Establishment which included a store, shops, and housing. In 1869, Thomas D. Ficklin, a Civil War veteran, purchased the 4 acre Litwalton property, which had been mortgaged to the county glebe fund by the Mitchell brothers.
