Understanding Auxochromes in Chemistry by Taanz is a document available to read on EtoBox.
Certain groups called auxochromes can intensify the color produced by chromophores in organic substances. Examples of auxochromes include -OH, -SO3H, and -COOH (acidic), and -NH2, -NHR, and -NR2 (basic). For example, azobenzene is red in color while p-hydroxyazobenzene is a brighter red due to the auxochrome -OH intensifying the color. The Beer-Lambert law describes a linear relationship between absorbance and concentration of an absorbing species in a solution. Absorbance is directly proportional to the pa
