Environmental Disasters in South Asia by askmee is a document available to read on EtoBox.
Floods are a major natural disaster in South Asia, exacerbated by environmental degradation. Seasonal flooding occurs in large river basins from prolonged rainfall, inundating areas for weeks. Flash floods also occur from intense short-term rainfall in mountainous areas. Glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) periodically release large amounts of stored water from glacier lakes, causing damage. In Nepal, 20 glacial lakes have been identified as potentially dangerous, including 3 with past outburst records.
