What is Preface about?
THE HOOK AND LINE fishing methods used in Hawai'i are so different from those employed in other parts of the world that standard reference books on salt water fishing are of little value to the serious island angler. It is easy to see why this difference exists. The fish have different habits, and often even different identities. The environment presents obstacles and advantages found in few other places. The fishermen themselves have evolved from a different cultural heritage. Since the days of the first Hawaiian fisherman, who plied his trade sometime before A.D. 750, an extensive treasury of island fishing lore has developed, extending to the techniques of the modern angler with his sophisticated space-age equipment. No comprehensive analysis of all of these diverse hook and line methods has yet been compiled. This book is intended to fill the gap. It is written in the words and deeds of hundreds of expert fishermen for whom angling is both a sport and a way of life. Several contemporary sports fishermen deserve special mention for their unique contributions to this book. Ken Ozaki first introduced me to the sport of whipping with light spinning tackle and has remained my tutor
