What is Understanding Drizzle and Freezing Drizzle about?
Drizzle consists of very small raindrops that form when updrafts in clouds are not strong enough to produce full-sized rain, and it usually falls from low-level clouds less than 1,000 feet above the ground where fog is also often present. Freezing drizzle can occur in winter when a warm layer of air sits above a shallow layer of below-freezing air, allowing drizzle drops to reach the ground as icy pellets before having time to fully freeze in the cold air.
