The research project by the Centre for Research on Contemporary History Potsdam and the Berlin Wall Memorial Site aimed to establish the exact number and identities of individuals killed at the Berlin Wall from 1961 to 1989. Through extensive archive research, the project identified at least 138 victims. The vast majority (144) were escapees shot dead or who suffered fatal accidents during escape attempts.
