What is Understanding Engine Knocking Mechanisms about?

Knocking, or detonation, occurs in internal combustion engines when the unburned fuel-air mixture explodes before the flame front from the spark plug reaches it. This creates a shockwave that produces a metallic pinging sound. Knocking happens when the remaining unburned mixture is heated and pressurized by the advancing flame front, causing an instantaneous explosion. If knocking persists it can cause damage to engine parts due to excessively high cylinder pressures.
