What is Editorial about?

In 1991 Geotechnical and Geological Engineering carried a special issue devoted to the theme of local materials for road construction (Vol. 9, Nos. 3/4). This issue continues that theme, with more papers from Brazil and Ghana describing experiences with road construction materials being used for lightly trafficked roads. The first paper by Frempong investigates the use of two stabilization techniques (lime and sand) on micaceous residual soils from Ghana. Lime is often considered for stabilizing clay-rich soils, but might not be thought of as an ideal stabilizer for micaceous soils, since it relies on a pozzolanic reaction with clay minerals. However, Frempong shows that the addition of 6-8% lime produces sufficient improvement in plasticity, California bearing ratio, unconfined compressive strength, shrinkage and swelling for the materials to become suitable for use in sub-base layers. Addition of a medium sand also had beneficial effects although large quantities (30%) had to be added to achieve the required improvement. The paper by Medina and Guida reports on investigations into the use of phosphoric acid as a stabilizing agent for lateritic soils from Brazil. They show that th
