Functions of the cytoskeleton du ring neuronal development. The cytoskeleton is the major intracellular structure that determines the morphology of a neuron. Therefore, cytoskeletal mechanisms which Iead to a change in the shape of a cell have an important rote in several fundamental processes du ring the development of a neuron. These include the formation of minor processes (neurites), the development of apolar cytoarchitecture, axonal pathfinding, dendritic differentiation and structural plasticity. Some of the mechanisms that contribute to these processes are summarized in this article. It becomes clear that a highly coordinated interaction of several cytoskeletal filament systems critically contributes to all of these processes. Many of the interactionstake place in the neuronal membrane cortex which appears to have an important rote in integrating the function of the different filament systemsandin translating extracellular signals into changes of neuronal shape. Future research will concentrate on studying the function of the cytoskeleton in an authentic nervous system context.
