## THE MATHEMATICAL GAZETTE dynamic features. There is little, besides references, on computational aspects of hydrodynamic stability, but that is not the point of the book. The idea is to introduce the reader to the fundamental ideas by copious examples and exercises on the main analytical methods and toy models. The exercises are key to this book, and parts of the text are little more than commentary on what should emerge from working through the exercises. As a result, some parts of the text make rather dreary reading -rather like a technical report -but these do not last long. The contents are what one would expect in an 'introduction'. The basic ideas of bifurcations and instability in steady flows, Kelvin-Helmoltz instability, capillary instability of a jet, weak non-linear theory, Rayleigh-Bernard convection, Couette instabilities, parallel inviscid and viscous flow. There are short chapters on the routes to chaos and turbulence, and case studies in transition to turbulence, but these are really brief outlines of what one can expect in full-blooded computational fluid mechanics, and that is really another book. Anyone who has worked conscientiously through this book will hav
