Turing machines are an abstract model of computation that can be used to simulate any algorithm or computer. Alan Turing first introduced the concept in the 1930s. Ethereum was the first blockchain to be Turing complete, meaning its smart contracts can be programmed to perform any computational task. This allowed for unlimited applications but also introduced security risks, as seen in the DAO hack of 2016 which exploited a vulnerability in a smart contract.
