This systematic review and meta-analysis of 77 randomized trials involving 11,997 mechanically ventilated adults found that dexmedetomidine reduces the risk of delirium and modestly shortens the duration of mechanical ventilation and ICU stay compared to conventional sedatives. However, its use is associated with increased risks of bradycardia and hypotension. The findings suggest that while dexmedetomidine may offer benefits in sedation management, careful monitoring for adverse effects is necessary.
