The Cardiff Bay Barrage, a 1.1 km long structure, was constructed by the Balfour Beatty/Costain Joint Venture and is owned by Cardiff Bay Development Corporation. It has created a freshwater lake and features protective curved breakwaters made from massive pre-cast caissons. These caissons were cast in Cardiff, floated into place, and filled with sand to secure the structure.
