This study investigated the effects of different disturbances (organic mulching, cultivation, herbicides) on the detritus food web in annual maize and perennial asparagus cropping systems over 2.5 years. Biota in the perennial asparagus system was most responsive to disturbance. Mulching strongly influenced the microflora and caused increases in predatory but not microbe-feeding nematodes through tritrophic effects.
