What is The Economic Theory of the Multinational Enterprise about?
This book systematically surveys and extends the economic theory of the multinational enterprise (MNE). The approach taken, based on the internalisation rubric and least cost location, is contrasted and compared with other approaches and the results of testing the theory are presented. The alternatives to the multinational are treated in detail. For instance, multiplant firms are contrasted with cartels. Many aspects of MNE behaviour are found to be common to all modes of international technology transfer. The location decisions of MNEs are modelled in detail across countries and through time and the influence of financial and organisational factors is traced. Finally, entrepreneurship, the dynamic element in the management of MNEs, is integrated with the theory and the flows of information and intermediate products within the firm are shown to be of great importance.
